Marathon everRun® HA by AET

Persistent problems with the existing hardware system and its configuration prompted Azienda Ellectrica Ticinese (AET) to look for an easily manageable, cost-efficient system with low maintenance requirements, but high availability. This system was to guarantee, as far as possible, the 7/24h operation of ET3000® at two separate IT centers without manual interventions.

 

 

During the design phase, AET specified that the downtime of the entire system should be as low as possible while minimizing maintenance work. This requirement plus the budgetary framework eliminated highly maintenance-intensive and expensive MS Windows cluster systems from the list of options.

 

As the customer operates two separate IT centers a few kilometers apart, the solution was designed and implemented by means of Marathon everRun® HA with split side option. This permits the uninterrupted operation of systems running under MS Windows even when various components fail (network cards, HD controllers) that otherwise would inevitably result in system failures and downtimes.

 

The protection offered by Marathon everRun® HA with split side option covers server, network and hard disk failures without requiring proprietary hardware, application adaptation or customized scripts.

 

 

To implement the concept, two new HP DL380G5 servers were bought that were equipped with different hardware modules (e.g. number of CPUs) in order to reduce license fees for third-party software.

 

For ensuring system monitoring, the new server environment was integrated into an Oracle Grid Control environment that is also used for backing up data with the Oracle Recovery Manager. Thus, any faults that might occur are actively managed, which is of great importance for uninterrupted system operation.

 

As Delta’s IT Services is in charge of all the design and implementation work as well as support services during the maintenance phase, the workload of the customer is reduced who, therefore, can focus on core business.
